From the famous quote of Hippocrates going all the way back to the ancient Greeks up to the recent burst of functional medicine doctors like Dr. Zack Bush, we are reminded that the food and nutrition we put into our bodies is one of the strongest, most precious medicines we have.
Nothing could be truer, especially when it comes to your pets. Their bodies are smaller and they live much shorter lives than we do. Every little thing they are exposed to has a much larger exponential effect on them, for good or bad.
By understanding this and working with it, you have a key that can unlock a beautiful, thriving, healthy life for our beloved animals!
In our current times with our food supply that much more contaminated with agribusiness chemicals and the cost of pharmaceuticals and veterinary care rising, the one thing we have in our back pocket to truly help our animals is NUTRITION!
MUSHROOMS: My favorite food group
If there is one type of food that can have an impact on your animal's overall health, it is MUSHROOMS.
Mushrooms contain this magic compound - no, I'm not talking about psilocybin to make you see pretty colors - called BETA GLUCANS.
Beta Glucans is a polysaccharide that activates the immune system to fight off infections and hunt down abnormal cells. It also decreases inflammation that leads to disease, among other things. Nearly ALL mushrooms contain it, some in higher concentrations than others.
In addition to this one molecule, mushrooms contain hundreds of other molecules, some specific to the type of mushroom, that help the body to heal and function at its best.
Even those little white button mushrooms you buy in the grocery store contain medicine!
Last Spring, I taught a program on the Big 5 medicinal mushrooms: Reishi, Turkey Tail, Chaga, Cordyceps, and Lions Mane. I received such great testimonials from it, I decided to do Part II.
You are cordially invited to join me for Part II Food as Medicine: Culinary Mushrooms
This is actually an answer to a challenge put forth to me by the scientific director of Real Mushrooms. When I gave a practitioner's roundtable presentation on the 5 Elements and Medicinal Mushrooms - a short version of my longer class in the Gateway - he asked me if I had given any thought to the many culinary mushrooms, such as maitake, shiitake, and Tremella. and how they fit into the 5 Element system. So here is it is:
These are mushrooms you can find in the produce aisle of the grocery store. Just chop them up, saute them in some butter, and put them in your dog's food bowl.
I have tested them all out on my own animals, and they love them. You can catch the videos on social media.
I think we all need to have some more fun in our lives, so get ready to make up some delicious mushroom recipes for us human caretakers!
